I should say not. That would be quite a trick to win the AL East.
Aside from the gaffe, this take doesn't seem unreasonable.
But a couple of things should be pointed out:
1. Contending for the division or contending for a wild card? Contending for a wild card means what as September rolls around? Two games over .500?
2. A majority of New York sportswriters recycle this story every single year.
