"The nature of the errors - it wasn't like they were sloppy," Torre said. "Guys made diving plays to stop balls. Sure, it cost you a ballgame, but it's certainly not something I'm going to dwell on for sure, because these guys played their tails off."

Let's ponder these thoughts...
1) Miguel Cairo is NOT a first baseman.
2) Neither is Jorge Posada.
3) Andy Phillips, althouhg a little better, is not the answer.
4) You can't just play anyone at 1B. It may not be the most taxing position, but it still requires some skill and certainly experience.
Spoken like a true Mattingly acolyte.
Please don't forget about Damon and, in the playoffs, Sheffield. Exhibit A for the argument that Torre didn't take the 2006 ALDS seriously.
Most enjoyable part of last weekend's games may have been Waldman hysterically defending Cairo. Mother Hen couldn't allow all the playground bullies to make fun of her big-eared adopted son.
A few innings later, she was criticizing ARod for playing in the All Star Game.
