Somebody ask him about pinch-running for Giambi.

Kevin Thompson batting with two outs in the ninth.

I think Torre got in the habit of putting in late-inning defensive replacements for Giambi when Giambi was playing first base.

Now, Torre is putting in late-inning defensive replacements for his designated hitter.

Odd, that.

Couldn't agree more.

And another thing...STOP bringing the infield in with Mariano on the mound. He's not a ground ball pitcher.

It really is odd to hear Postgame Torre talk about his Plan. The Plan was for Proctor to pitch the 7th and give up zero runs. Then, mix and match Myers and Bruney in the 8th and they give up zero runs. Then, Mariano in the ninth and he gives up zero runs.

That's just a typical example, not specific for Fri. night's game.

So, Kevin Thompson's at-bat wasn't supposed to matter. It's not my fault! Scott Proctor wasn't supposed to give up any runs!

So what was the contingency plan, Joe? There wasn't one.

As for playing the infield in ... how about Abreu playing shallow in RF with two runners on and DAVID ORTIZ BATTING?

The most powerful left-handed bat in the AL and Abreu is playing shallow in RF.

I'm still ranting about Abreu.

See, that's what I want the writers to ask. What is the possible rationale for playing Abreu shallow in RF with David Ortiz batting?

A child knows this is dumb.

A European soccer fan watching their first baseball game knows this is dumb.

Even John Sterling knew it was dumb.

I just want to hear the rationale. Was it a chart? Was it a gut feeling? Wanted to cut off the line drive single rather than the fly ball double?

There has to be a rationale and it's very likely a stupid rationale and it very likely cost the Yankees the ballgame.

Won't anybody ask this question? Maybe somebody asked the question and I didn't find it.

I think it's the kind of play that would have lived in baseball infamy forever if it had occurred in the World Series.

Yeah, I forgot about that play. I am trying to block all memories from this weekend. I think Torre was trying to do some things in the outfield. Abreu can definitely do some things when Ortiz hits the ball over his head. He can retrieve the ball and throw it into the infield. He could also attempt to throw a runner out - something he couldn't have done if he actually caught the ball. So, he was definitely trying to allow Abreu to do some things.
